Rockies try and cut into San Diego's wild card lead

Baseball Betting Lines

09/08/2007 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - It sure took an awful lot of pitchers, but Colorado managed to pick up ground in the wild card race. The Rockies will shoot for a series win over the San Diego Padres tonight when the clubs resume a three- game series at Coors Field.

Kaz Matsui hit a two-run homer in Colorado's 10-4 victory in the series opener on Friday. The Rockies also used a total of 10 pitchers in the contest, which tied a major league record for a nine-inning game.

Elmer Dessens started the game on the mound, but left after 2 1/3 innings with a left hamstring strain. Matt Herges (4-0) got the win for pitching 2 1/3 scoreless innings. None of the other eight pitchers used threw more than an inning for the Rockies.

Troy Tulowitzki went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and two runs scored for the Rockies, who have won four of their last five games and climbed within three games of the Padres for the National League wild card lead.

The loss, meanwhile, dropped San Diego two games back of first-place Arizona in the NL West.

Adrian Gonzalez drove in three runs and Mike Cameron scored a pair of runs for the Padres, who have lost three straight and four of their last five games. Justin Germano (7-9) got the loss for giving up five runs on six hits in just three innings of work, his shortest start of the season.

Padres outfielder Milton Bradley left the game in the seventh inning with a strained oblique

Control ace Greg Maddux shoots for his fifth straight winning decision when he toes the rubber for the Padres. The ageless right-hander beat Arizona on Monday behind 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball. He also allowed six hits and didn't walk a batter for the seventh straight start while improving to 11-9 with a 3.75 earned run average.

On the year, Maddux has walked just 21 batters in 175 innings and hasn't issued a free pass since walking Houston's Roy Oswalt on July 28, a streak of 191 batters faced and 48 1/3 innings.

Maddux, though, still has a ways to go to match his own NL record of 72 1/3 consecutive innings without a walk, set in 2001.

The righty is 13-7 with a 4.06 ERA in 25 career starts versus the Rockies, and bested the club on August 14 after throwing 5 2/3 scoreless innings to start his current winning streak.

Having already set a career high in wins, Jeff Francis starts for the Rockies. The left-hander won his 15th game of the season on Monday after holding the Giants to three runs and nine hits over 5 2/3 innings. He also has six losses on the year with a 4.12 ERA.

Francis lost to the Padres on August 14 after getting hammered for eight runs in just 3 1/3 frames, falling to 4-9 in 14 career starts against them with a 6.57 ERA.

The Padres are 7-6 versus the Rockies this season, with Colorado winning four of seven at home in the series.

With the field of 64/65 set, MySportsbook.com has the Florida Gators as the 4-1 favorite to successfully defend their National Championship.  Men’s Division-1 College Basketball has not seen a team repeat as National Champions since Duke won back to back championships in ’91 & ‘92.  After losing three out of four late in the season, the Gators are full of momentum as they won their last four games by an average of 18 points.  Not surprisingly, right behind the Gators are the other three top seeds: Kansas 5-1, UNC 6-1, and Ohio State 7-1.  Many consider Kansas to be the hottest team in the country, having won 11 straight. With Kansas, it is hard to ignore all of the early exits from the “dance” in recent years.  With an impressive ACC Tournament, UNC ensured themselves the other top seed.  UNC has about as much talent as any other team in the tournament but with a team that’s best players are primarily freshman and sophomores, could youth be a concern.  Behind freshman sensation, Greg Oden, OSU will look to do what their football team failed to do just a few months earlier.  OSU seems to have peeked at the right time, as they currently have a 17 game winning streak.  Since the tournament field was expanded in 1985, there has never been an instance where all four #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four.  It is obvious that each of the top seeds have the talent to make it through to Atlanta.  But as everyone knows, when makes the NCAA Tournament so special are all of the spoilers and “Cinderella” stories that knock off the favorites on a daily basis.
